These days, “home” seems like an overused word.
As most of us sit at home, clueless about what to do next, are desperate looking for activities that will fulfill our craving for having a feeling besides boredom. Most of us probably have distant learning on weekdays, where you have to study for about five hours, but what about the rest of the day? What would you do when you crave some leisurely time for yourselves, dedicated purely to having fun? Luckily, we here at The Wow Kids have gone above and beyond to research everything a kid wants to do when they’re stuck at home. We’ve got you covered!
The things The Wow Kids will be talking about in this article is what to do when you get bored, how to do it, and how it will benefit you. Read on to take the first step in enjoying quarantining yourself.
1. Arts and Crafts
Back when we used to be able to go outside, many of us may have taken advantage of abstract items. What I mean by that is that we totally ignored the fact that we have things existing in the world other than phones, laptops, iPads, computers, television and more. We used to focus on mostly those items. Some of us may still do that during the pandemic, but I’m sure that all of us are a little more artsy than before. With all this free time we have, we can do anything. Some Arts and Crafts may help.
The Wow Kids have some suggestions of what Arts and Crafts you can do. An example of a wonderful and easy-to-draw arts and craft activity is making paper snowflakes! This is a fun and guaranteed exciting activity, and it can help pass time. How, you wonder, will you possibly make paper snowflakes? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We will be explaining how to make paper snowflakes:
- Cut an A4 paper into a square shape and fold it into a diagonal.
It doesn’t have to be a perfect square shape: it just has to be square enough to have equal lengths if you fold it into a half. When you have cut an A4 paper, you should then fold it into a diagonal. When you’re done with that, it should look like this:
(You should not cut off the other side of the square, you should just fold it so it will look like a diagonal. Take this one as an example to look at. Both sides are visibly folded and it is in the shape of an isosceles triangle.
- The next step is to cut your paper into any design you want!
This step is the unique step: you can cut any corners in any style and make it look awesome! You should make it look pretty and glamorous, and especially unique, like a real little snowflake! This is how I cut mine:
You can cut it in any creative way you want. We’re at our last step now!
- Open up your paper snowflake: enjoy!
You can now open up your snowflake! Here’s how mine looks:
Even if it’s not the best thing in the world, your snowflake is yours and you should be proud that you even gave it a try!
This is a very creative way to pass excess time.
2. Study Something
There’s no better way to go than studying something in your free time, and no, this doesn’t necessarily have to be school (but if it’s compulsory, of course) it could even be a new language. It could also be how to do something; perhaps how to climb monkey bars, or anything that you struggle with really.
It could be very interesting to look into your capabilities and try something new, and also, who knows – you might even be good at it! For example, you could try getting better at art, and find out that you’re actually very good at it! So, trying your best and not giving up is the way to go! So, try your best, study something new, and admire your new capabilities. Good luck!
Ah, reading. Everyone tells you to do it! Your parents, your teachers, and everyone that is involved in your education. For some people, it may be a gift. You may feel like it’s the best hobby to do, but for others, reading may be more of a curse (mostly people who haven’t thoroughly tried the hobby.) It is mostly a fun hobby if you find the books that are suitable for you. For some of you, graphic novels might do the trick, but for some of you, fat books with interesting mystery plots may be slightly more suitable, but in any way, reading can surely replace an afternoon of binge watching television, which, in turn, gives you a better vocabulary. Now, I will suggest some wonderful books for you to read:
- MARY POPPINS
This amazing classic talks about a “spick-and-span” nanny who was capable of many powers. She looked after two kids: a girl and a boy called Michael and Jane. She took them into all sorts of adventures and helped bring their family closer meanwhile; and also enjoyed teaching them awesome magic. The book is very interesting, and The Wow Kids sure does recommend it to anyone! The author, Pamela Lyndon Travers, sure knew how to make the story interesting!
- GANGSTA GRANNY
This quirky and fun book is sure to bring a smile on your face – and a tear in your eyes by the end. Ben thought his grandmother was boring and always didn’t look forward to staying with her in the weekends. His grandmother found out and told Ben that she was an international thief back in her day! Ben and Granny find themselves about the steal the crown jewels – when a heart-warming secret is revealed! This masterpiece by David Walliams will make you appreciate the little things in life.
- THE HARRY POTTER SERIES
This awesome series of books by J.K Rowling will keep you hooked for ages! All seven books of Harry Potter are filled with adventure, fun, magic and even some mystery! Explaining the life of Harry Potter, from him being lucky to having a lot of hidden secrets, will definitely give you a rollercoaster of emotions. So, join Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger through all seven books, and remember to read the book before you watch the movie!
4. Get In Contact With Your Friends!
Sometimes, all you need is some vital human communication to satisfy boredom. It could be to an old friend, or even a current one. Whatever you choose, I’ll guarantee you, to reconnect with a friend after such a long time of not seeing them will definitely make you overjoyed. You can either text them or call them, but one thing’s for sure: it makes a couple of minutes or hours pass by. We highly recommend it!
